The direct answer

A corporation’s first tax year starts on incorporation and its fiscal period cannot exceed 53 weeks. The year-end is declared on the first T2, subject to applicable exceptions. The financial information must cover the same period. Choosing December 31 is not compulsory for every company, and a short first period may be appropriate.

Start with the incorporation documents

Confirm the corporation's legal start date and proposed first fiscal period. Do not assume the first year must match the owner's personal tax year or run for a full calendar year. Discuss the operational reasons for the chosen date and the records available. The first T2 needs a consistent opening position, reporting period and set of financial statements.

Map the resulting obligations

Once the year-end is established, record the filing and payment dates separately. Include any shorter first period in the bookkeeping instructions. If the business has already filed using a year-end, disclose that history before changing it in software. A corporate date is not something to revise casually just because a different month would now be convenient.

What to gather before the review

  • Certificate and date of incorporation
  • Proposed fiscal period and opening records
  • Earlier filings or correspondence about the year-end

Can I choose any length for the first corporate year?

No. The first tax year is subject to the applicable maximum and other rules. Establish the dates before preparing the financial statements or calculating the filing schedule.

Your next step

Bring the incorporation date and discuss the year-end before finalizing the books or assuming a deadline.
