A corporation’s T2 return is separate from its shareholders’ personal T1 returns. The company’s fiscal year-end, business activities and transactions drive the preparation work. Most Canadian resident corporations must file annually even when there is no tax payable; exceptions need to be assessed rather than assumed.
Start with complete financial records
Provide a trial balance, financial statements or other organized accounting records, along with the prior T2 and assessment. Shareholder loans, dividends, asset purchases and disposals can require additional review. We identify missing information and discuss any work beyond the agreed tax-preparation scope before proceeding.
Clarify all related filing needs
Corporate income tax, GST/HST, payroll and shareholder reporting are separate obligations. Let us know which accounts and filings are involved so the engagement is clearly defined. Provincial corporate reporting can also require separate attention, including Alberta filings where applicable. Ongoing bookkeeping and assurance engagements are not part of the services described here.
What helps us scope a corporate tax quote?
Tell us the fiscal year-end, which years need filing and whether the bookkeeping and financial statements are ready. Mention related personal returns or GST/HST work you also need.
Understand preparation scope and fees →General information only. Requirements depend on the facts and the tax year. Service scope is confirmed before engagement.
Before you get started
Can we discuss ways to reduce our company’s tax burden?
Yes. We can discuss your company’s tax position and identify areas that need closer review. The appropriate approach depends on your business, ownership and personal circumstances, with the scope agreed before we begin.
Can you help with several overdue corporate tax returns?
Yes. Tell us which corporate year-ends are outstanding and whether the bookkeeping is up to date. We review prior filings, financial records and CRA correspondence, then confirm the years, preparation work and fee. We identify any bookkeeping cleanup needed before preparation; ongoing bookkeeping is outside our scope.
Does an inactive corporation still need a return?
An inactive Canadian resident corporation will generally still have a T2 filing obligation. We review the company’s status and any applicable exceptions.
Can you prepare a return using my bookkeeper’s records?
Yes, we can assess the records your bookkeeper or accountant provides. The information needs to be complete enough to support the return; additional requirements are discussed before preparation.
