Looking for ways to reduce your tax bill?

We help self-employed clients look beyond the expenses they already know to claim. By understanding your work and reviewing your records, we can identify eligible deductions and tax-saving opportunities relevant to your circumstances. We explain what needs further review before recommending next steps.

Tax preparation shaped around your work

We welcome inquiries from self-employed people and commission earners across Ontario. Tell us what you do, how you are paid and whether you operate personally, through a partnership or through a corporation. Your work arrangement and business activities determine the records and tax filings to review.

Commission income: employed or self-employed?

Receiving a commission does not automatically make you self-employed. An employee’s commissions form part of employment income; eligible employment expenses may require an employer-completed T2200 and a T777 calculation. A sole proprietor generally reports business or professional income and expenses on T2125 with their T1. Incorporated businesses have separate T2 returns. We review your work arrangement and records to establish the filing scope.

Bring the detail behind your income

Gather statements, invoices and tax slips from each source. Identify commissions, advances, renewals, chargebacks, platform fees, reimbursements and other adjustments where relevant. Deposits alone may not show gross income or amounts withheld. If you have both employment and self-employment income, keep the supporting records for each activity clear.

How can I avoid missing eligible business expenses?

Start with organized records for each business activity, including costs you are unsure how to classify. Explain how each cost relates to your work and identify any personal-use portion. We review supporting records and the applicable tax treatment so eligible claims are considered; a receipt alone does not establish a deduction.

Coordinate your personal and business reporting

For an unincorporated business, the business results generally form part of the owner’s T1 return. GST/HST reporting is a separate matter and depends on the business’s activities and registration status. If your business is incorporated, ask about corporate T2 preparation. Our service focuses on tax preparation and related filings; ongoing bookkeeping is outside the practice’s scope.

Have business income and a rental property?

Keep records for each activity distinct. Mention both income sources so the preparation discussion covers the full picture.

Common questions

Before you get started

Why is CRA asking for instalments after I paid last year’s taxes?

The reminder may concern advance payments for the current year. Paying a prior-year balance does not settle that question. Bring the reminder, your latest assessments, current income and expense summaries, and payments already made. We can confirm whether an instalment review is included in the agreed work; do not reduce a payment without checking the calculation.

Can you help me find ways to pay less tax as a self-employed professional?

We review your business and personal tax information together to look for eligible deductions and overlooked opportunities. Tell us about your work, tax years and concerns so we can discuss the review you need.

Which self-employed professions do you work with?

We welcome inquiries from all self-employed professions, including independent professionals, contractors, freelancers, tradespeople, service providers, online sellers and commission earners. Describe your activities and business structure so we can confirm the returns and preparation work required.

Do you prepare taxes for psychologists, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals?

Yes. Healthcare and therapy professionals can contact us about personal, self-employed or corporate tax preparation. We establish whether you are an employee, operate your own practice, work through a corporation or have more than one income arrangement, then confirm the returns and records needed.

Can you help tradespeople who work as subcontractors?

Yes. Tell us about your trade and business structure, and gather contracts, invoices, payment statements and organized business records. We can discuss the income tax return and any related filings within the agreed scope.

Can you help if I earn commissions as an employee?

Yes. Commission employees can discuss T1 preparation and eligible employment-expense claims. We review the employment arrangement, slips, employer documentation and supporting records; a T2200 alone does not make every expense deductible.

Can I work with you remotely in Ontario?

Yes. Arsen Accounting Services is based in Ontario and provides remote Canadian tax preparation. Start with a brief description of your work and tax years; we will discuss the scope, records and document-sharing arrangements.

Does every commission earner need to charge GST/HST?

GST/HST treatment depends on the work arrangement, services provided and registration requirements. Employee commissions and self-employed business revenue need different consideration. We review the relevant activities and agreements before confirming any GST/HST work.
