Build an accurate picture of the outstanding years
A missing return, a return assessed by CRA without your filing, and a correction to a previously filed return are different situations. Provide prior assessments and correspondence so the work can be scoped appropriately. We look at each year’s income sources and identify which slips, receipts or business records are still needed.
Can I file overdue tax returns if some records are missing?
Available CRA slips can be useful, but they may not include every source of income or every deduction. Self-employment, rental income, investment costs and foreign income often require your own records. Where documentation is missing, we discuss what can be obtained and what remains uncertain.
Address related obligations separately
Several outstanding personal returns may also reveal GST/HST, corporate or information-return issues. Those filings need their own assessment. Preparing a late return does not itself remove interest or penalties, settle collections, or guarantee eligibility for a relief program. Any additional assistance needs to be expressly agreed.
A practical first inquiry
Tell us the tax years, province and main income sources, and whether CRA has given you a response deadline. You do not need to send a full set of sensitive documents in the first email. We will discuss availability, the preparation scope and how to share the necessary records securely.
- CRA: Personal income tax
- CRA: Filing when you cannot pay, interest and late-filing penalties
- CRA: Options if you cannot pay your tax debt right away
General information only. Requirements depend on the facts and the tax year. Service scope is confirmed before engagement.
Before you get started
Should I wait to file if I cannot afford the tax bill?
No. Filing a return and paying the balance are separate obligations. CRA advises filing on time even if you cannot pay in full. If your return is already overdue, arrange its preparation and contact CRA about payment options; filing does not erase existing penalties or stop interest on an unpaid balance. A payment arrangement may be available through CRA. We can discuss preparing the missing returns and confirm our preparation fee before starting.
Can you help if more than one year is missing?
Yes. We can discuss multiple outstanding years, identify missing records and agree on the preparation work required.
Will filing overdue returns eliminate penalties?
No automatic cancellation follows from filing. Penalties, interest and any possible relief depend on the facts and applicable rules. We do not promise a particular CRA outcome.
