My corporation had no income. Do I still need to file a T2?
An inactive corporation may still need a T2 return. Check filing deadlines, electronic filing, remaining balances and separate GST/HST obligations.

Usually, yes. A Canadian-resident business corporation generally must file a T2 return for every tax year, even if it had no revenue, was inactive or owes no income tax. “Nothing to pay” and “nothing to file” are different conclusions. CRA — Who must file a T2 return
First confirm what “no activity” means
A company without customer sales can still have incorporation costs, bank charges, an owner’s advance, equipment, interest income or outstanding liabilities. Review the records before describing every balance as zero. Also distinguish a corporation from an unincorporated sole proprietorship, whose business reporting ordinarily belongs with the owner’s personal return.
CRA’s inactive-corporation guidance distinguishes a genuinely inactive corporation with no balance-sheet or income-statement information from one that has figures to report. The presence of no revenue alone does not remove the need to prepare the appropriate information. CRA — T2 guide, inactive corporations
Use the corporation’s year-end to find the deadline
A T2 is generally due six months after the corporation’s tax year-end. The year-end may differ from December 31. For example, a December 31, 2026 year-end ordinarily leads to a June 30, 2027 filing deadline. Confirm the actual year-end and the applicable calendar rules. CRA — Corporations and T2 filing deadlines
If tax is payable, the payment deadline is usually earlier: generally two months after year-end, or three months for corporations meeting the relevant conditions. Filing six months after year-end does not extend the balance-due day. CRA — Corporate tax payment due dates
Check the electronic filing requirement
For tax years starting after 2023, T2 electronic filing is generally mandatory, with specific exceptions. CRA identifies a $1,000 penalty for failing to file electronically when required. Choosing a paper “nil return” is therefore not a safe shortcut just because the tax balance is zero. CRA — Corporation income tax returns and electronic filing
A T2 Short Return also has eligibility conditions. It is not interchangeable with every inactive or low-revenue company’s filing. Confirm the return format and submission method before preparing the package. CRA — Corporation income tax returns and electronic filing
Keep the corporation’s other accounts in view
Corporate income tax and GST/HST are separate. If a GST/HST account remains open, a return is generally required for each reporting period, including periods with no business activity. Check the account status instead of assuming an inactive business has no sales-tax filings left. CRA — GST/HST reporting requirements and deadlines
Also identify payroll accounts and corporate-registry requirements for separate review. Filing a T2 does not mean those other tasks have been completed, and ceasing sales is not the same as formally dissolving the corporation.
What to gather for an inactive-company review
- Incorporation details, business number and confirmed tax year-end.
- Prior T2 returns, assessments and any demand-to-file correspondence.
- Bank and credit-card statements for the whole fiscal period.
- Records of amounts paid or received personally by shareholders for the company.
- Assets, debts and balances carried forward from earlier years.
- GST/HST and payroll account status and any closure documents.
A short written explanation of what happened during the year can help: when operations stopped, whether the bank account stayed open and what the owner expects to do with the company next.
Common questions
Does my personal T1 cover the company?
No. A corporation is a separate taxpayer and its T2 filing needs to be considered separately from the shareholder’s personal return.
Can I just enter zero on every line?
Only accurate figures belong on the return. Check expenses, shareholder balances, assets and liabilities before assuming all amounts are nil.
