The direct answer
The T2 normally needs complete financial information, including a balance sheet and income statement reported through GIFI. Bank statements are supporting records, not necessarily a complete set of accounts. Receivables, payables, loans, inventory, assets and owner transactions may be missing from a cash-only summary. Reconciled books help make the return reviewable.
Begin with reconciled financial records
A T2 draws on the corporation's financial position and activity, not just the year's deposits and withdrawals. Provide a trial balance, income statement and balance sheet with supporting schedules. Explain unreconciled accounts and unusual entries. The preparer can then map the financial information and review tax adjustments without pretending a bank statement is a complete set of books.
Make balance-sheet items understandable
Shareholder balances, loans, assets, receivables and payables need supporting detail. Identify who the amounts relate to and whether they agree with statements or ledgers. Do not clear an unexplained balance merely to make the books balance. A short note identifying the uncertainty is more useful than an unsupported entry that carries into the tax return.
What to gather before the review
- Reconciled trial balance and financial statements
- Bank, loan, asset and shareholder schedules
- Prior T2, assessments and year-end adjustments
Can a preparer complete a reliable T2 from bank statements alone?
Bank statements are useful supporting records, but they do not normally establish every income, expense, asset and liability. Agree on any bookkeeping work needed before treating the file as return-ready.
Your next step
Provide a trial balance, general ledger, reconciliations and prior-year closing balances before requesting return-only preparation.
