The direct answer
No. A corporate registry annual return and a CRA income-tax return serve different purposes. Corporations Canada explains this distinction for federal corporations; provincially incorporated companies follow the relevant registry’s requirements. Filing one should not be assumed to satisfy the other. Keeping the corporation legally active and completing its tax filings are separate responsibilities.
Identify the organization asking for the return
A corporation may receive notices from its corporate registry and from CRA. Keep both and identify the legal name, business number and corporate registration information. An annual registry filing and a corporate income-tax return serve different purposes. Completing one should not be recorded as completing the other simply because both use the words “annual return.”
Maintain a single obligation list
Track each filing by authority, period, due date and confirmation. If someone else handles the registry work, obtain confirmation rather than assuming it was included with tax preparation. Share notices promptly so responsibilities are clear. This also helps distinguish a corporate-status problem from an outstanding T2 or another CRA account filing.
What to gather before the review
- Registry notices and incorporation details
- CRA corporate account and tax-year information
- Confirmations of filings completed by other advisers
Does paying the registry fee mean my corporate taxes are filed?
No. A registry payment or annual return is not the T2 income-tax filing. Confirm the status of each obligation separately and retain the appropriate submission records.
Your next step
Check your incorporation jurisdiction and maintain separate reminders for registry and CRA filings.
