The direct answer
Fees for services can require T4A reporting, including payments between businesses. Depending on the recipient and activity, another slip such as T5018 or T4A-NR may be required instead. Receiving an invoice does not remove the payer’s reporting responsibilities, and employee wages cannot be converted into contractor fees just by issuing a different slip.
Identify what each payment represents
Separate service fees from goods, reimbursements and other payments in the supplier ledger. Explain who received the amount and the nature of the work. The applicable information-reporting requirements need to be checked for the actual transaction and current CRA guidance. A supplier calling themselves self-employed does not resolve the payer's reporting responsibilities.
Review employment status as a separate issue
A slip choice cannot turn an employee into an independent contractor. If the relationship is uncertain, provide the working facts before deciding how payments should be reported. Keep recipient information and corrections secure and traceable. Reconcile the final reporting totals with the ledger so the expense records and information returns do not tell conflicting stories.
What to gather before the review
- Supplier service contracts and payment detail
- Recipient identification and residency information where relevant
- Employment-status facts and prior reporting corrections
Can I issue a T4A solely to avoid payroll obligations?
No. Reporting must follow the actual relationship and applicable rules. If the worker may be an employee, review the status and payroll implications rather than relying on a slip label.
Your next step
Review recipient residency, the service supplied and annual payment totals before the information-return deadline.
