The direct answer

No. Corporate income tax and GST/HST have separate returns, accounts and reporting periods. The sales and tax balances should reconcile, but submitting one return does not satisfy the other obligation. A company may also have payroll and information returns. Confirm what an engagement includes so that a separate filing is not overlooked.

Maintain separate account records

Corporate income tax and GST/HST have different returns, calculations and reporting periods. Keep the business number and program-account details clear in the file. A corporation can have one return completed while another remains outstanding. Identify each engagement responsibility explicitly so neither the owner nor preparer assumes the other filing was included automatically.

Reconcile shared bookkeeping inputs

The same sales and purchase records may feed both systems, but their tax treatment is not identical. Preserve tax-control accounts and explain gross-versus-net expense treatment. Compare filed GST/HST returns with the books before finalizing year-end adjustments. If a correction affects both areas, identify the separate steps rather than assuming one amended return updates every account.

What to gather before the review

  • T2 fiscal period and GST/HST reporting periods
  • Filed GST/HST returns and reconciliations
  • CRA account statements and year-end adjustments

If my T2 is filed, can I ignore a GST/HST filing notice?

No. Confirm the status of the separate GST/HST period. A completed corporate income-tax return does not prove that the sales-tax return or payment obligation has been satisfied.

Your next step

Create a list of CRA program accounts and the latest completed period for each one.
