The direct answer

Use CRA’s reassessment process with revised schedules and an explanation of the changes. A corrected bookkeeping file by itself does not amend the tax return. CRA accepts requests through specified electronic or written methods, depending on the situation. Review the affected year, available time limits and any related filings before submitting changes.

Identify exactly what changed

Keep the filed return and prepare a schedule of the corrected amounts and reasons. Explain whether the issue comes from new information, a bookkeeping correction or a tax-treatment error. The preparer needs to understand the difference between the original and revised positions, not just receive a replacement spreadsheet with no explanation of what was edited.

Use the proper adjustment process

Do not simply transmit another original return and assume it replaces the first. Review the available reassessment or adjustment route and retain submission records. If the change affects related schedules, losses or other returns, identify those consequences. Keep the supporting documents with the correction so any later CRA question can be answered consistently.

What to gather before the review

  • Filed T2 and notice of assessment
  • Revised financial records with a change schedule
  • Supporting documents and adjustment confirmations

Should I overwrite the old return file after finding an error?

Keep the original filed version and create a clearly identified correction record. This preserves the audit trail and helps the preparer explain what changed and why.

Your next step

Keep the original return, assessment, revised figures and a clear before-and-after reconciliation.
