The direct answer
The reporting rules can apply when construction is the business’s primary income-earning activity and it pays Canadian-resident subcontractors for construction services. CRA specifies the conditions and payment threshold; it is not limited to incorporated subcontractors. Employment wages are reported differently, so worker classification must come first.
Assess the payer's activity and payments
A construction business should review whether the contract-payment reporting rules apply to its activity and subcontractor payments. Keep a supplier list showing the work performed, amounts and identification details. A subcontractor invoice is useful, but it does not establish that all reporting has been completed. Review the payer's obligations separately from the expense deduction.
Collect identifying information early
Obtain the information needed for reporting when the subcontractor relationship begins, using an appropriate secure process. Waiting until the filing deadline can leave gaps that are difficult to resolve. Reconcile payments with the books and identify refunds or adjustments. Keep the reporting-period basis clear so the same payment is not omitted or included twice.
What to gather before the review
- Subcontractor contracts and payment ledger
- Required recipient identification obtained securely
- Activity details and previous reporting-period records
Does deducting subcontractor invoices on the T2 replace T5018 reporting?
No. The deduction and information-return obligations are different. Where reporting is required, the appropriate slips and summary need attention in addition to the corporate income-tax return.
Your next step
Keep each subcontractor’s legal details and totals separate from employee payroll and materials-only purchases.
