The direct answer
No. A slip or contract label does not replace the facts of the working relationship. Control, equipment, financial risk and the opportunity for profit are among the considerations. An employee and a self-employed worker have different expense and contribution rules. If the status is uncertain, CRA has a CPP/EI ruling process; changing the label on a return is not a substitute for resolving the facts.
Describe how the work is performed
The name on a contract and the type of slip are useful evidence, but the actual working relationship needs attention. Explain who sets the schedule, supplies tools and controls how the work is done. Include any ability to hire help or risk of losing money. A preparer needs this context before choosing an employment or business reporting approach.
Resolve the classification before claiming costs
Do not start with the deduction you want and work backward to a label. Employee and self-employed expense rules differ. If the slip appears inconsistent with the arrangement, keep it and ask about the appropriate review or correction process. Simply moving an amount to a different section of the return does not resolve an underlying disagreement.
What to gather before the review
- Contract and description of actual duties
- T4, T4A and payment summaries
- Details of tools, scheduling, supervision and financial risk
Does receiving a T4A make every work expense deductible?
No. The slip alone does not decide employment status or expense eligibility. First establish the relationship, then apply the correct rules to the specific income and costs.
Your next step
Bring the contract and explain who sets your hours, supplies tools, pays expenses and bears losses.
