The direct answer

There is generally a commission-income limit on the relevant commission-employee expenses, with exceptions for vehicle interest and capital cost allowance. In some circumstances, claiming under the narrower salaried-employee rules can produce a different result. The method must meet its own conditions. Being paid partly by commission does not make all sales-related spending deductible without restriction.

Distinguish commission employment from a business

A real estate professional, salesperson or adviser may be an employee or operate independently. The job title does not settle the return treatment. For a commission employee, bring the employment agreement, T4 and employer certification. Explain which costs were required, which were reimbursed and how the commission income is identified. Those facts shape the allowable calculation.

Review limits before combining expenses

Some commission-employee deductions are limited by commission income, with specific treatment for certain items. Do not assume the self-employed rules apply because compensation varies with sales. Keep vehicle, travel, promotion and other categories separate. If the claimed expenses approach or exceed commissions, flag that early so the preparer can check the restrictions rather than force a business-style loss.

What to gather before the review

  • T4 and commission compensation details
  • T2200 and employment agreement
  • Expense categories with reimbursement and personal-use adjustments

Can I use the same approach as a self-employed salesperson?

Not automatically. The employment relationship matters. A commission employee must use the applicable employment-expense rules, even when daily activities resemble those of an independent business owner.

Your next step

Provide your T4, T2200, commission breakdown and separate vehicle-interest and asset records so both approaches can be reviewed.
