The direct answer
No. Payroll remittances follow the employer’s assigned remitter type and due dates, independently of the corporate return. The schedule can be monthly, quarterly where eligible, or more frequent. A year-end tax engagement does not replace payroll compliance during the year. Even a period with no pay can require the appropriate nil reporting.
Keep payroll on its own calendar
Payroll withholding and remittance obligations arise from the payroll arrangements and assigned remitter rules, not simply from the corporate year-end. Track pay dates, amounts withheld and remittances throughout the year. Give the preparer account correspondence and identify any missed or disputed payment. A clean T2 file does not by itself establish that payroll obligations were completed.
Reconcile the liability to the CRA account
Match payroll summaries, the general ledger and CRA payment records. Investigate differences instead of clearing them with an unexplained entry. If a payment went to the wrong account, retain the correction correspondence. This creates a reliable starting point for year-end slips and prevents a payroll balance from remaining hidden until corporate tax preparation.
What to gather before the review
- Payroll registers and pay dates
- Remittance schedule and payment confirmations
- CRA payroll statements and unresolved notices
Will filing the T2 fix overdue payroll remittances?
No. Payroll is a separate obligation. Identify the outstanding amounts and periods and address the account directly rather than waiting for the annual corporate income-tax filing.
Your next step
Check the CRA remitter classification and reconcile wages, deductions and payments each period.
