The direct answer

A donation made by the corporation belongs in the corporation’s tax calculation, not automatically on the shareholder’s T1. Corporate charitable deductions use Schedule 2 and are subject to their own limits and carryforward rules. The receipt and actual donor should agree. Sponsorship or advertising purchases need separate classification rather than being treated as gifts by default.

Identify who made the gift

Keep the official receipt in the name of the actual donor and reconcile it with the paying account. A corporation and its shareholder are separate taxpayers. If the owner paid personally or the company paid an amount on the owner's behalf, explain the arrangement. Do not move a receipt between returns simply because one produces a better immediate result.

Separate gifts from promotion and purchases

Sponsorships, event tickets and donations can have different features. Keep the agreement and details of benefits received rather than classifying every payment to a charity in the same way. The preparer can assess the eligible amount and correct corporate treatment. Retain carryforward records if the amount is not used entirely in the current year.

What to gather before the review

  • Official receipts and payment evidence
  • Sponsorship or event agreements and benefits received
  • Earlier corporate donation carryforward schedules

Can I also claim the corporation's donation personally?

No. The same gift cannot be used as both a corporate and personal claim merely because you own the company. Establish the donor and applicable treatment from the records.

Your next step

Keep the official receipt and evidence showing which taxpayer made the contribution.
