The direct answer
A graduated rate estate can use a non-calendar year-end, but it has a deemed year-end when it stops qualifying, no later than the end of the 36-month period after the passing. Later year-ends generally follow the calendar year. This can create a short additional period and another filing obligation. Probate timing does not reset that 36-month clock.
Put the anniversary on the filing timeline
Record the date of passing, each previous fiscal period and the end of the graduated-rate period. An anniversary can create a year-end issue even while the executor is still working through administration. The preparer needs the timeline early enough to identify any short period and collect records for the correct dates.
Do not divide statements without checking the period
A calendar-year investment statement may span more than one estate fiscal period. Reconcile transactions and income to the relevant periods instead of dividing every amount by twelve. Keep the opening and closing balances used for each return. Where information arrives later, track the estimate and reconciliation rather than assuming the anniversary can be ignored until all slips are available.
What to gather before the review
- Date-of-passing record and earlier fiscal periods
- Estate bank and investment transactions
- Prior T3 returns and status information
Can the estate keep the same non-calendar year-end forever?
Not simply because administration continues. The permitted year-end depends on the estate's status and relevant rules. Review the 36-month transition before carrying forward the old period automatically.
Your next step
Map the estate’s prior periods and the third anniversary before scheduling the next T3.
