The direct answer

Yes. Adjusted aggregate investment income of a Canadian-controlled private corporation and associated corporations can reduce the federal business limit. The federal reduction applies across the specified $50,000-to-$150,000 range, but the calculation is not simply the investment account’s ending balance. Provincial treatment and the nature and timing of income also need attention.

Separate investment income from operating profit

Prepare a schedule of the corporation's investment income and gains rather than combining everything into one revenue figure. Identify relevant associated corporations and their amounts as well. The small-business-limit calculation can depend on a defined passive-income measure, which may differ from a simple investment-account total or the profit shown in the books.

Review the timing and group information

Provide the relevant prior-year information and current ownership history so the preparer can apply the correct period and grouping rules. A dividend received, asset sale or other investment event should be documented before assuming its effect. Do not make transactions solely from a headline threshold without calculating the applicable amount and broader consequences.

What to gather before the review

  • Investment slips, realized-gain schedules and statements
  • Associated-corporation information
  • Relevant prior-year tax calculations and ownership changes

Does every dollar of investment income remove a dollar of the business limit?

No. The rules use specific measures, thresholds and calculations. Have the relevant corporate and group information reviewed rather than applying a one-for-one assumption to the bank's income total.

Your next step

Bring investment slips, realized gains and losses, and information for associated companies.
