The direct answer
Not necessarily. Associated corporations can have to share the federal business limit, and association involves ownership and control rules rather than just company names. Family ownership and other arrangements can matter. The deduction also depends on the type of income and other conditions. Review the group before estimating each company’s tax independently.
Provide the whole ownership picture
List related corporations, shareholders, voting rights and relevant family or trust connections. A preparer cannot reliably assess association from one corporation's financial statements alone. Explain ownership changes during the year and provide the agreements that affect control. The small-business calculation may need to consider more than the company whose return is currently being prepared.
Coordinate the related returns
If different preparers handle related corporations, share the necessary ownership and allocation information consistently. Do not assume each corporation gets an unrestricted separate business limit. Keep any allocation agreement and supporting calculations with the year-end file. A coordinated approach helps avoid contradictory positions and makes later changes easier to trace.
What to gather before the review
- Ownership charts and shareholder agreements
- Details of related corporations and fiscal periods
- Prior allocations and changes in control
Can a family multiply the business limit by opening more corporations?
Not automatically. Association and other rules can affect the limit available to the group. Review the ownership and control facts before assuming each corporation receives a separate amount.
Your next step
Prepare an ownership chart showing shareholders, related companies and their year-ends.
