The direct answer
Usually the lower-net-income spouse or partner must claim eligible child-care expenses, even when that income is zero. The higher-income person can claim only in specified circumstances, such as qualifying education or incapacity situations. Paying the bill from the higher earner’s bank account does not override these rules. The allowed deduction also depends on the child, expenses and applicable limits.
Review the family, not just the receipt
The receipt identifies the expense; it does not establish which parent can claim it. Prepare both partners' income information before deciding where the deduction belongs. Where study, illness or separation may matter, provide dates and supporting details. A description such as “one parent was home” is less useful than a clear account of the family's circumstances during the care period.
Separate eligibility from the amount paid
A family may have substantial bills but a smaller allowable deduction. The claimant rules and applicable limits both need to be considered. Keep subsidies and reimbursements visible so the preparer can reconcile the actual out-of-pocket cost. If a prior return is being reviewed, retain the original calculation as well as the supporting receipts.
What to gather before the review
- Receipts showing each child and care provider
- Both partners' income and study information
- A schedule of reimbursements and relevant family changes
Can we choose the parent who gets the larger refund?
The family cannot simply assign the expense to whichever return produces a better refund. Start with the claimant rules, then calculate the permitted deduction using the family's actual information.
Your next step
Bring both income summaries, child-care receipts and dates of study, illness or separation that could affect the calculation.
