The direct answer

Payment alone does not give a parent the tuition credit. The student first calculates what must be used on their own return. A permitted amount of unused current-year tuition may then be designated for transfer; amounts carried forward from earlier years remain with the student. Filing the student’s return helps preserve the correct record even when no tax is payable.

Start with the student's own return

A family tuition review begins with the student's income, tuition document and carryforward balance. Paying the school bill is only one part of the history. The student needs to know what is being used now, what can be transferred and what remains for later. Coordinate the family returns so that the same tuition amount is not assigned in conflicting ways.

Keep current tuition separate from older balances

Do not combine every unused amount into a single “parent credit” figure. Current-year tuition and prior carryforwards have different roles. If a parent changed preparers, bring the student's assessment rather than relying on last year's family spreadsheet. A clear transfer instruction also avoids different relatives assuming they will claim the same amount.

What to gather before the review

  • The student's T2202 and income slips
  • Latest notice of assessment showing tuition balances
  • Signed designation identifying any permitted recipient

Can a parent take all tuition because the student owes no tax?

No. A zero tax balance does not remove the transfer limits or the requirement for the student to designate an eligible amount. The student's calculation still comes first.

Your next step

Collect the T2202, the student’s latest assessment and any signed transfer designation before preparing the family returns.
