The direct answer
Age alone does not establish eligibility. The Canada caregiver amount depends on the qualifying relationship, impairment, dependency and the dependant’s income, with different rules for different claims. Paying a parent’s expenses can be relevant evidence, but it does not automatically make the entire payment deductible. Medical support for the impairment may be needed.
Describe the support you actually provide
A useful caregiver review explains the relationship, the parent's needs and the assistance you provide. List housing, groceries, medical appointments or other support separately. Include the parent's net-income information even if you do not prepare their return. The preparer needs the relevant facts to assess a credit; a total labelled “money sent to Mom” is not enough.
Do not turn support payments into an expense claim
Helping a parent can be financially demanding, but the tax treatment does not simply follow the amount spent. Keep possible caregiver credits separate from a medical-expense review and from ordinary family gifts. Where several relatives help, explain who provides what. That allows the family to discuss the available claims without making competing assumptions.
What to gather before the review
- Parent's income information and relevant relationship details
- A description of support and dependency
- Medical documentation relevant to the impairment
Does my parent's age alone make me eligible?
No. The caregiver rules require more than an older parent's age. Provide the dependency and impairment information so the applicable credit, income conditions and supporting evidence can be assessed.
Your next step
Gather the parent’s net-income information, a description of the support you provide and relevant medical documentation.
