The direct answer
The purpose and nature of the course matter. Training that maintains existing business skills can be treated differently from training that creates a new qualification or enduring benefit. Personal-interest courses do not become business expenses merely because you discuss them with customers. CRA’s specific training bulletin is archived, so its guidance needs to be considered with the current expense rules and your facts.
Explain the connection to existing work
Keep the course outline and describe how it relates to the services you already provide. Updating established skills and obtaining a new qualification can raise different issues. The provider's marketing description is not enough to settle the tax treatment. A short explanation of your current business and the purpose of the course gives the preparer useful context.
Do not rely on an old bulletin alone
CRA's archived training guidance can explain the historical distinction, but it is not a substitute for reviewing current law and the particular cost. Separate course fees, travel, meals and equipment. If an education slip was issued or an employer reimbursed part of the amount, disclose it so incompatible or duplicate claims can be avoided.
What to gather before the review
- Course outline, invoice and completion information
- Description of existing work and intended use of skills
- Education slips, reimbursements and related expense receipts
Does a course become deductible because it may earn money later?
Future earning potential alone does not establish a current business deduction. The nature of the training and its connection with the existing activity require a fact-specific review.
Your next step
Provide the syllabus, invoice and a short explanation of how the course relates to your existing services.
