The direct answer
Not necessarily. Withholding is credited against your final income-tax calculation. A withdrawal can increase taxable income enough that additional tax remains payable, depending on other income and credits. Conversely, the final calculation could produce a refund. Do not budget using only the amount the bank withheld, particularly when making a large withdrawal.
Plan using the full year's income
A withdrawal can arrive with tax already deducted, but that deduction is a payment toward the final tax calculation. Bring the gross withdrawal amount, tax withheld and other expected income to the review. Comparing only the cash received with the amount withdrawn does not show the complete effect on the annual return.
Identify the type of withdrawal
Ordinary withdrawals and transactions under specific registered-plan programs should not be combined without explanation. Keep the plan documents and any program forms. If a withdrawal was made near year-end, confirm its reported year with the issuer. Reconcile the tax slip with the account statement instead of estimating income from the net bank deposit.
What to gather before the review
- RRSP withdrawal slip and account statement
- Other income information for the year
- Relevant program forms or transfer documents
Does the withholding percentage guarantee that I owe nothing later?
No. Final tax depends on the complete return. Withholding may be more or less than the additional tax calculated once all income, deductions and credits are considered.
Your next step
Ask for a projection using the year’s total income before taking money out.
