Tax preparation with Elena Arsen, CPA, CMA · Arsen Accounting Services

Tax slips are only part of the information

Investment income may appear on slips, while the cost of investments and complete transaction history may need to come from your own records. Provide purchase records, sales, fees, transfers and corporate-action information so the available data can be reconciled. A missing or incomplete cost figure can materially affect a gain or loss calculation.

Crypto transactions need a complete history

Selling a crypto-asset is not the only transaction that can have tax consequences. Exchanges between crypto-assets and other dispositions may also need reporting. Include exchange exports and relevant wallet records, with dates, transaction types and Canadian-dollar values or supporting valuation information.

Determine the appropriate treatment

Investment and crypto activity may involve capital gains or losses, business income, or other income depending on the facts. The classification is reviewed rather than assumed. Tell us about trading frequency, staking, mining and other activities at the start so we can assess the scope and identify any specialist work needed.

Connect the reporting to the right return

The taxpayer may be an individual, corporation, estate or trust. Foreign holdings can raise additional information-reporting questions. We coordinate the agreed schedules with the relevant return and discuss any missing transaction data before preparation is completed.

Common questions

Before you get started

Is a T5008 enough to calculate my gain?

Not necessarily. Cost information can be incomplete, and adjustments may be needed. Provide your purchase history and other supporting records.

Does exchanging one cryptocurrency for another matter?

It can. A crypto-to-crypto exchange may be a disposition with tax consequences even if no Canadian dollars were withdrawn.
