The direct answer
CPP, QPP and OAS are not eligible for the T1 pension-income-splitting election. Certain other pension income may qualify, and age and type of payment matter. CPP pension sharing is a separate process, not the same election. Compare eligible pension amounts and both spouses’ circumstances before assuming a 50/50 split is available or beneficial.
Identify the pension source first
Retirement income can include CPP, OAS, workplace pensions, registered-plan withdrawals and other payments. Sort the slips by source before considering pension-income splitting. A payment being received after retirement does not automatically make it eligible for the tax-return election. The couple's ages and the nature of each amount may be relevant to the review.
Keep different programs separate
CPP pension sharing and the income-tax pension-splitting election are different processes. Do not assume choosing an election in software changes how Service Canada pays benefits. If the couple already uses a sharing arrangement, provide the details. The preparer can then assess the income reported and any eligible election without treating every retirement payment alike.
What to gather before the review
- All retirement-income slips for both partners
- Ages and relevant relationship information
- Details of CPP sharing or earlier pension elections
Can we simply split our combined retirement income in half?
No. Eligibility applies to particular income under specific rules. Review the sources and the available election or benefit-sharing process rather than dividing the household total automatically.
Your next step
Bring every pension slip and identify each plan rather than combining them into a single pension total.
