The direct answer
No. Taxes collected through a booking platform do not replace your income-tax return. You still need to determine and report the rental or business income, related expenses and your own GST/HST obligations where applicable. Platform deposits may be net of fees, so the amount received in the bank is not necessarily the gross revenue to report.
Reconcile gross bookings with payouts
A platform payout may be reduced by fees, refunds, taxes or other adjustments. Keep the detailed statement so the preparer can identify the underlying rental income and costs. Reporting only the net bank deposit can hide important components. Reconcile each platform and property separately, especially where you also accept direct bookings.
Identify which tax was collected
A statement saying “tax remitted” does not necessarily refer to your Canadian income tax or satisfy every obligation. Determine the type of tax, period and jurisdiction shown. Keep GST/HST and local accommodation charges distinct from the annual income-tax calculation. The platform's processes do not replace a review of your own registration, filing and recordkeeping responsibilities.
What to gather before the review
- Detailed booking and payout reports
- Platform fees, refunds and tax breakdowns
- Direct-booking records and relevant tax registrations
If the platform remits tax, can I omit the rental from my return?
No. Do not treat a platform's collection arrangement as proof that your income-tax reporting is complete. Reconcile the rental activity and review each tax obligation separately.
Your next step
Download the full annual booking statement, fees, refunds and taxes collected, then reconcile it to deposits.
