The direct answer
For most individuals, provincial income tax follows residence on December 31, assessed using the relevant residential ties. It is not simply a split based on the number of months worked in each province. Temporary study or work arrangements can complicate the answer, and business income allocated to more than one province can require additional treatment.
Explain your residential ties
A move involves more than changing a mailing address. Tell the preparer where your home, spouse or partner and dependants were located, and whether the arrangement was temporary. Include the date you moved and any home still available elsewhere. A clear timeline helps distinguish a permanent relocation from a work assignment or time away at school.
Separate residence from payroll withholding
An employer's province and the province used for payroll deductions do not necessarily answer the personal-return residence question. Bring all employment slips and explain where you actually lived. If you also operated a business in several provinces, flag that separately so the personal residence review is not mistaken for a complete business-income allocation analysis.
What to gather before the review
- Move dates and housing arrangements
- Locations of close family and relevant residential ties
- Employment slips and details of business locations
Should I divide provincial tax by months spent in each province?
That is not the usual approach for an individual resident throughout the year. Start with the year-end residence rules and identify any special circumstances before making an allocation.
Your next step
List the move date, homes available to you and where your spouse or dependants lived.
