The direct answer
You can generally claim eligible donations made by either spouse or common-law partner on one return, subject to the limits. Comparing the family’s claims can be worthwhile, but the same donation cannot be claimed twice. Most unclaimed eligible donations can be carried forward for up to five years. A payment needs to be an eligible gift to a qualified recipient; a fundraising purchase is not automatically fully deductible.
Create one family receipt list
Gather both partners' receipts before deciding how to use the donation credits. Identify the donor, eligible amount, year of gift and whether it has already been claimed. Keep fundraising tickets and purchase receipts separate until their eligible gift amount is confirmed. This prevents the same receipt from being included in two independently prepared returns.
Consider timing without promising a result
The best allocation depends on the family's tax situation and available amounts. A larger pile of receipts does not always mean an immediate refund of the same size. If donations are being carried forward, retain a schedule and supporting receipts. A future preparer should be able to see what remains without reconstructing several years of files.
What to gather before the review
- Official receipts for each spouse or partner
- Unclaimed-donation schedules from prior returns
- Details of any benefits received in exchange for a payment
Can I claim a charitable payment twice if we share an account?
No. A shared bank account does not create two gifts. The family must coordinate the claim so each eligible donation is used only once within the applicable rules.
Your next step
Collect official receipts and a list of donations already claimed or carried forward by each partner.
