The direct answer

Eligible employment-related annual union or professional dues may be claimed with appropriate support, even if the T4 does not show them. Required professional or malpractice liability premiums can also qualify under the applicable rules. Initiation fees and special assessments are not treated like ordinary annual dues. Check whether the amount was reimbursed and avoid claiming a receipt again when it is already included on the slip.

Check both slips and direct payments

Some dues appear on an employment slip, while others are paid directly to a professional body. Bring both sources so the preparer can reconcile the year's total. Identify what each payment covers. Membership, licensing, insurance, training and special assessments should not be merged without checking their treatment, even when one organization collects them together.

Prevent duplicate claims

A common recordkeeping problem is entering a receipt and then adding the same dues again from a slip. Use a simple schedule showing the payee, date, amount and where it was reported. If an employer reimbursed you, include that information. The goal is an accurate eligible amount, not the sum of every document mentioning the payment.

What to gather before the review

  • T4 slips showing dues
  • Receipts and membership fee breakdowns
  • Employer reimbursement details and prior-year adjustments

Can every professional membership be deducted?

No. The nature of the dues and the applicable employment rules matter. Tell the preparer whether membership relates to maintaining a recognized professional status or serves another purpose.

Your next step

Reconcile membership receipts to T4 box 44 and identify what each payment covers.
