The direct answer
Most clothing and tools are not deductible employment expenses simply because you use them at work. Specific rules can permit eligible tradesperson or apprentice-mechanic tool claims, subject to their conditions and limits. Do not apply a business-owner expense rule to an employee’s return. Uniform requirements and the nature of a tool need to be considered separately.
Separate clothing from qualifying tools
A purchase needed for work is not automatically an employment deduction. Ordinary clothing and specialized tools must be reviewed under the relevant rules rather than placed in one “work supplies” total. Identify your occupation, who required the purchase and whether an employer supplied or reimbursed it. Keep detailed invoices showing the actual items purchased.
Avoid claiming the whole store receipt
A hardware or clothing-store receipt can contain both personal and work items. Mark the items for review while retaining the original document. If a specific tradesperson or apprentice tool provision may apply, give the preparer the supporting employment information. Do not assume another worker's claim establishes your eligibility or the amount allowed for your year.
What to gather before the review
- Itemized invoices and purchase dates
- Employer requirements and reimbursements
- Occupation, apprenticeship and certification details where relevant
Can I deduct a uniform simply because my employer requires it?
A workplace requirement does not automatically create an income-tax deduction. The item and the specific employee expense provision must be checked. Keep the receipt, but do not assume it belongs in the claim.
Your next step
Bring itemized receipts, job details and employer certification for any potentially eligible tool claim.
