The direct answer

A reasonable wage for real work in the business can be deductible; a family transfer with no services behind it is different. Keep evidence of duties, hours and actual payment. Payroll income-tax and reporting requirements still apply. EI treatment for related employees needs its own review, so do not assume a family member is automatically included or automatically exempt.

Document the work as you would for anyone else

Keep a description of the duties, hours, rate and actual payments. A family relationship does not make a payment automatically deductible or automatically disallowed. What matters is the work arrangement and whether the amount can be supported. Clear records are particularly useful where duties change during the year or the person also receives unrelated household transfers.

Separate wages from family support

Do not label ordinary transfers as payroll after the year has ended without examining what actually happened. Bring payroll records and explain any payments made outside the usual process. The preparer may need to review employer obligations alongside the deduction. A payment schedule should identify services performed rather than simply dividing money among family members.

What to gather before the review

  • Job description, time records and rate basis
  • Payment evidence and payroll summaries
  • Details of family transfers unrelated to the work

Can I deduct an amount because my spouse helped occasionally?

Help should be documented and any claimed payment must meet the applicable requirements. Describe the work, timing and amount actually paid before deciding how it should be reported.

Your next step

Document the role and pay rate before payment and confirm the payroll setup.
