The direct answer

Once you become a Canadian tax resident, worldwide income during the resident period generally becomes relevant to your Canadian return. Immigration status and tax residency are not identical. Income before residency can also be requested for credit or benefit calculations without necessarily being taxed in the same way. Establish the date and separate the periods before entering a yearly total.

Establish the residency timeline

The date you arrived, your residential ties and the date you became resident for tax purposes need to be understood together. Do not assume a passport stamp alone answers every residency question. Explain where your home and close family were located and whether you maintained significant ties elsewhere. This context comes before deciding which income belongs on the Canadian return.

Divide records by the relevant period

Gather income before and after the residency date and label the currencies. Some information may be needed for calculations even where it is not taxed in the same way as income earned during Canadian residence. Identify foreign assets and accounts for a separate review. A complete first-year file reduces the chance of carrying an incorrect opening position into later returns.

What to gather before the review

  • Arrival dates and residential-tie information
  • Canadian and foreign income by period
  • Foreign account, asset and tax documents

Should I report only money transferred into a Canadian bank?

No. Bank transfers do not define taxable income. The residency rules and nature of the income determine reporting, including relevant foreign amounts that stayed outside Canada.

Your next step

Prepare an arrival timeline and income statements covering both the pre-residency and resident periods.
