The direct answer

A foreign tax credit may be available for eligible foreign income or profits tax on income included in your Canadian return. Limits, the type of income and treaty rules affect the result; the credit is not automatically every dollar withheld. Taxes connected with treaty-exempt income or registered accounts need different consideration.

Report the income and tax separately

Keep the gross foreign income, tax withheld and net payment distinct. A foreign tax payment does not automatically remove the income from the Canadian return. Give the preparer the country, income type and supporting statements. This allows the Canadian reporting and any credit or other relief to be calculated under the relevant rules.

Use a consistent currency record

Retain the original-currency amounts and the conversion method used. If a foreign assessment changes the tax later, provide that notice rather than assuming the earlier Canadian calculation remains correct. Separate refundable withholding from final tax where the documents show a difference. The goal is to reconcile two tax systems without treating the foreign result as a Canadian calculation.

What to gather before the review

  • Foreign income slips and assessment documents
  • Tax withheld, paid or refunded by country
  • Currency conversion records and relevant Canadian slips

Will Canada always credit every dollar of foreign tax?

Not necessarily. The credit is subject to rules and limits. The income, country and nature of the tax must be reviewed before estimating how much relief is available.

Your next step

Keep foreign slips and statements showing gross income, country, currency and tax paid.
