Non-cash compensation can be taxable business income. If products, travel, or other benefits are received through your content business, do not assume they disappear from the tax calculation because the brand did not send money.
Record the business arrangement
CRA's influencer guidance includes monetary and non-monetary income from sponsorships, collaborations, referral activity, and other platform work. Business expenses must still meet the usual deductibility conditions. The GST/HST position is a separate review.
Identify whether an item was compensation, a loaned product that must be returned, or something else. Keep the contract and communications. A label such as “gifted collaboration” does not establish that the arrangement is a personal gift unrelated to business.

Track value as well as cash
For example, a brand provides an item in exchange for a video. Record the agreed arrangement, delivery date, and support for the value used. Separately record any eligible costs of producing the content. Do not automatically deduct the entire product value merely because it appeared in the video.
Maintain a campaign ledger
- Brand and platform names, deliverables, and dates.
- Cash paid and non-cash items received.
- Valuation evidence and whether items were returned.
- Production costs and any personal use.
Reconcile the ledger with platform payouts, bank deposits, and tax slips. Include foreign brands and platforms in the review. If merchandise later becomes personal property or is sold, retain those details too. Organizing campaigns when they occur is easier than trying to reconstruct a year's packages, trips, and affiliate benefits during tax season.
