Commercial rideshare drivers generally must register for GST/HST when they start earning fares, regardless of the ordinary small-supplier threshold. That makes ridesharing different from many small service businesses.
Separate passenger transportation from other work
CRA states that the $30,000 small-supplier threshold does not apply to commercial ridesharing fares. Even if a platform handles collection, the driver remains responsible for the applicable reporting and remittance obligations.
Delivery work and other taxable sales may have different registration considerations. If combined taxable sales remain below the ordinary threshold, CRA says the mandatory registration can generally apply only to the rideshare activity unless broader registration is requested. Review the activities together before choosing an approach.

Reconcile the platform statement
For example, a driver sees only a net deposit after platform fees. The tax records need the gross fares, GST/HST, fees, and adjustments. Treating the net deposit as total sales can omit relevant amounts.
Prepare a driving-business file
- Start date for passenger ridesharing and other activities.
- GST/HST registration confirmation and effective date.
- Platform summaries showing fares, tax, fees, and payouts.
- Vehicle expenses and business-use records.
Ask your preparer to reconcile income-tax reporting separately from the GST/HST return. If you started driving without registration, identify the first fare date and obtain advice on correcting the account. Do not wait for revenue to reach $30,000 before reviewing the obligation, and do not assume a platform's tax summary confirms that every required return has been filed.
