The direct answer
It is not normally part of the deceased person’s final T1. Reporting depends on who received it: the estate may report it on a T3, or the recipient may report it personally. Income allocated by an estate to a beneficiary can require a T3 slip. CRA also describes a narrow non-taxable situation, so the recipient and estate facts matter.
Identify who received the payment
Keep the benefit notice, slip and payment information, and explain whether the amount was received by the estate or another person. Do not assume it belongs on the final T1 simply because it relates to the person who passed away. The reporting needs to follow the applicable benefit and recipient rules.
Distinguish it from other death-related payments
An employer payment, insurance proceeds and CPP death benefit are not interchangeable categories. Label each receipt and retain its supporting documents. If the amount moved from the estate to a beneficiary, keep the distribution record as well. The preparer can then assess which return or slip is relevant without relying on a general description such as “inheritance money.”
What to gather before the review
- CPP payment notice and related slip
- Recipient and estate distribution information
- Separate records for insurance or employer payments
Is every payment received after a death tax-free inheritance?
No. Different payments have different treatment. Identify the source and recipient before deciding how the amount should be reported; the connection with an estate does not settle the result.
Your next step
Keep the T4A(P), application and payment details and identify exactly who received the funds.
