Verify an unexpected CRA contact independently before sharing information or paying. A convincing logo, caller ID, or knowledge of your name is not enough. Open the official CRA website yourself rather than using the link supplied in the message.

Recognize the strongest warning signs

CRA says it does not send refunds by text message or e-transfer, accept cryptocurrency payments, or demand gift cards. Threats of immediate arrest or deportation and pressure to pay through unusual methods are warning signs.

CRA can legitimately contact taxpayers by phone, letter, automated message, or email in certain circumstances. An email notification about account correspondence is different from an email asking you to enter financial details through an unfamiliar link.

Use a verification routine

If someone says they are collecting a tax debt, note the claimed program, tax year, and employee details. End the interaction if you are uncomfortable, then use contact information you obtain independently from Canada.ca. Check your account for the relevant notice and balance.

If you already responded

  • Stop further communication through the suspicious channel.
  • Record the message, payment request, and time of contact.
  • Contact CRA through its official fraud-reporting guidance.
  • Contact your financial institution promptly if banking details or money were involved.

Tell your tax preparer if you notice an unfamiliar return, changed direct-deposit information, or unexpected account activity. Keep copies of genuine notices as well as suspicious messages so the two are not confused. A practical household rule is to pause every unsolicited payment request long enough to verify it independently, even when the caller sounds urgent or authoritative.
