Having no income does not necessarily mean there is nothing to file. A return can establish the income information CRA needs for benefits, preserve useful carryforward amounts, or satisfy a filing request. Start with your circumstances for that year, rather than whether an employer issued a T4.

When a zero-income return matters

CRA lists several reasons to file even when little or no tax is payable. These include maintaining income-tested benefits, recording unused tuition, and responding to a request to file. Where you have a spouse or common-law partner, both returns can matter to the family's benefit calculation.

Check what “no income” means. A year without wages may still include interest, employment insurance, pension withdrawals, foreign income, or business receipts. Some amounts are taxable and others have separate reporting treatment. A blank employment section is not enough to establish a zero-income return.

A practical example

Someone takes a year away from work and assumes their partner's return covers the family. Their own return still provides information needed to determine benefits. The useful first step is to list all income sources and benefit notices before deciding that nothing needs reporting.

Prepare a complete picture

Gather the following before requesting preparation:

  • Any slips in your CRA account and documents received directly from payers.
  • Your marital status and changes during the year.
  • Tuition records and prior notices showing unused amounts.
  • Information about children, residency changes, and benefit correspondence.

Ask the preparer to identify why the return is being filed and whether any separate benefit application is needed. Filing a return and applying for a particular program are not always the same task. Keep the submission confirmation and read the resulting assessment, even if the balance is zero.
