The direct answer
Each employer calculates payroll deductions using the information it has. Claiming the same personal credits on more than one TD1 can leave too little tax withheld when your combined income exceeds those credits. Review the multiple-employer section and consider whether extra withholding is appropriate. Separately, excess employee CPP contributions may be reconciled on the return; that does not necessarily eliminate an income-tax balance.
Review payroll forms when work overlaps
Each employer sees only part of your income. Tell the preparer when the jobs overlapped and bring the TD1 information used at each workplace if available. The payroll deductions during the year are not a final calculation of combined income tax. A second job can therefore create a filing balance even when both employers deducted tax regularly.
Reconcile rather than changing slips
Bring every T4 and let the return calculate the applicable annual amounts, including any contribution reconciliation. Do not alter a slip to make totals look more familiar. If something appears wrong, identify the employer and pay period for follow-up. Keeping employment dates and final pay statements makes that conversation much easier.
What to gather before the review
- All T4s and final pay statements
- Dates of concurrent employment
- Copies or details of TD1 claims made to employers
Does two jobs always mean I will owe more at filing?
Not necessarily. The result depends on total income, deductions, credits and tax withheld. Reviewing the combined picture is more reliable than drawing a conclusion from either employer's deductions alone.
Your next step
Bring both T4s and review your TD1 forms with payroll before the next pay cycle.
