The direct answer
Only if you still have enough unused contribution room. A withdrawal is added back to room on January 1 of the next calendar year, not immediately. Replacing it too soon can create an excess even though you previously contributed the same money. This rule matters when moving funds between institutions as well as when withdrawing for a short-term need.
Make a dated transaction list
Before replacing withdrawn money, collect contributions and withdrawals from every TFSA you hold. Put them in date order and separate direct institution-to-institution transfers from cash you withdrew yourself. A balance on a banking screen is not a contribution-room calculation. The question is how much room was available at the time of the proposed contribution.
Avoid treating a withdrawal as an immediate reset
A person can withdraw money for an emergency and later want to replace it, but timing matters. Confirm any unused room independently rather than assuming the withdrawal created it immediately. If an excess may already exist, obtain a prompt review of the transactions and applicable correction steps; do not make additional deposits while relying on a rough estimate.
What to gather before the review
- Transaction histories from every TFSA
- Prior contribution-room calculations and account records
- Details distinguishing direct transfers from withdrawals
Does opening another TFSA create more contribution room?
No. Your personal contribution room applies across your TFSAs. A second institution does not provide a separate allowance, so the review needs all accounts together.
Your next step
Calculate available room across all TFSAs before making a new deposit or arranging a transfer.
