You may generally keep an existing TFSA after becoming non-resident, but making new contributions while non-resident can trigger Canadian tax. An account remaining open does not mean contributions remain permitted on the same terms.
Stop and review automatic contributions
CRA states that non-resident contributions can be subject to a 1% monthly tax, with limited exceptions. TFSA contribution room and the treatment of withdrawals also change during non-residency. Do not rely solely on a contribution-room figure displayed before the move.
Canada generally continues to shelter income inside the TFSA, but the new country of residence may not recognize that shelter. The account can therefore need reporting or taxation abroad even when Canada does not tax the investment earnings.
Check recurring transactions
For example, an automatic monthly transfer continues after the owner has ceased Canadian tax residency. Each contribution should be reviewed, even if it uses apparent unused room. Tell the issuer about the residency change and obtain the complete transaction history.
Gather the TFSA file
- Residency-change date and supporting assessment.
- Contributions and withdrawals across all accounts.
- Automatic-transfer instructions and issuer correspondence.
- Prior excess or non-resident contribution calculations.
Ask your preparer how to correct any non-resident contributions and what tax forms are required. Avoid withdrawing and recontributing as a guess at the solution. Obtain advice in the new country about local treatment, and review the available Canadian room again before resuming contributions after a return to Canadian residency.
