The direct answer

No. Owner drawings are not deductible wages. The business’s income and eligible expenses determine the taxable profit; moving money from a business account to your personal account does not create a new expense. A sole proprietorship is different from a corporation paying remuneration to an owner. This distinction also helps explain why your bank balance and taxable profit can differ.

Separate business profit from cash withdrawals

Moving money from a sole-proprietor business account to a personal account does not by itself create a deductible salary expense. Your records should distinguish business income and costs from the owner's transfers. This is especially helpful when you pay household bills directly from a business account and the bookkeeping needs to identify the personal portion.

Reconcile both sides of a transfer

Mark transfers so they are not counted as sales in one place and expenses in another. Keep contributions you made to the business separate from customer receipts. A year-end review should be able to explain where the money went without assuming every payment reduced profit. The business's legal structure matters before any owner-payment strategy is considered.

What to gather before the review

  • Business and personal transfer schedule
  • Reconciled income and expense records
  • Notes identifying personal bills paid by the business

Will leaving all the money in the business account avoid personal tax?

Not by itself. A sole proprietor's tax generally follows business profit rather than the amount withdrawn. The bank balance and owner transfers are different measures from taxable business income.

Your next step

Label owner transfers clearly so they are not mixed into employee wages or operating costs.
