The direct answer
The payout destination alone does not determine the final-return income. An RRSP can create an income inclusion on the final T1, while qualifying survivor arrangements may change the treatment. A beneficiary’s payment and the estate’s tax obligation therefore need to be reviewed together. A slip issued in one person’s name should not be ignored because another person received the funds.
Read the designation and issuer documents
Identify the named beneficiary, plan type and amounts reported by the financial institution. A beneficiary designation determines more than who receives a cheque, but it does not by itself settle the tax reporting. Provide the relationship, residency and any transfer paperwork so the preparer can assess available treatment under the relevant registered-plan rules.
Coordinate the estate and beneficiary records
The estate's return and the recipient's reporting may need to be considered together. Keep slips, payment dates and elections consistent between the files. Do not assume a payment made outside the estate disappears from the final-return review. If the issuer corrects a slip, share it promptly with everyone preparing the affected returns.
What to gather before the review
- Plan statements and beneficiary designation
- All related slips and payment records
- Relationship, transfer and election documents
Does naming a beneficiary guarantee that no tax arises?
No. The designation does not automatically remove tax consequences. The recipient and applicable transfer rules must be reviewed before determining how the amount is reported.
Your next step
Gather the plan value at passing, beneficiary designation, payment statements and all related tax slips.
