The direct answer

Sometimes. Certain eligible income can be reported on an optional return instead of all being included on the final T1. That can change the deductions or credits available, but the income must qualify for the specific return. An executor cannot divide ordinary income among extra returns merely to reduce tax.

Identify income around the date of passing

Gather payment statements and explain when amounts were earned, became receivable and were paid. Some optional returns may be available in addition to the final T1, depending on the income and circumstances. A preparer needs the underlying facts to assess the options; the date a deposit reached the estate account is not always enough.

Compare the complete filing position

An optional return is not automatically required or beneficial. Review the eligible amounts, available claims and applicable deadlines together. Keep calculations and decisions in the executor's file so later advisers understand the approach. Do not split an income item across returns simply to produce a lower result without checking whether the rules allow that treatment.

What to gather before the review

  • Income details around the date of passing
  • Prior returns, slips and benefit statements
  • Estate documents and information about unpaid amounts

Does every estate need several optional returns?

No. Availability depends on the types of income and relevant conditions. The preparer should assess the complete position before recommending whether an optional filing is appropriate.

Your next step

Provide unpaid income details, payment dates and relevant estate information so the available return types can be reviewed.
