The direct answer

Do not assume a missing slip extends the deadline. CRA instructs trustees to estimate required income when necessary and request an adjustment if the final information differs. First confirm which income belongs to the trust’s fiscal period; a calendar-year investment slip cannot always be divided mechanically by months. Keep the calculation and obtain the missing information promptly.

Identify the income period first

An estate or trust may have a fiscal year that differs from the calendar-year period shown on an investment slip. Gather transaction statements and establish which income belongs to the return being prepared. A missing slip does not justify dividing the annual amount mechanically or ignoring the filing date. The calculation needs a documented basis.

Track estimates through to reconciliation

Where an estimate is required, label the source, assumptions and outstanding information. Keep a follow-up list for the final slip or issuer statement. When it arrives, compare it with the filed calculation and assess whether an adjustment is needed. The job is not complete simply because an estimated return was submitted on time.

What to gather before the review

  • Trust fiscal-period dates and account statements
  • Issuer correspondence about missing information
  • Estimate schedule and later reconciliation

Does a late investment slip automatically extend the T3 deadline?

No. The filing requirements still need attention. Use the applicable CRA guidance for estimating required information and correcting the return when the final amounts become available.

Your next step

Give the preparer transaction statements and the trust’s exact year-end, and track the later reconciliation.
