The direct answer

Not automatically. An amended slip may require an amended T3 Summary, and changes affecting the trust return or Schedule 9 need a T3 adjustment request or explanatory letter. Send the beneficiary the corrected slip and identify what changed. Reissuing the original return without the appropriate adjustment process can create confusion.

Reconcile all affected documents

A change to a beneficiary's slip may also affect the summary, distribution schedules or trust return. Compare the original and revised amounts and identify where each appears. Give the preparer the reason for the change, not merely a replacement slip. This prevents a correction in one document from leaving contradictory figures elsewhere in the file.

Tell the recipient which version to use

Provide the corrected slip through the appropriate process and keep a record of the change. If the beneficiary has already filed, they may need to review their own return. Do not assume amending the trust's paperwork automatically changes the recipient's assessment. Maintain the original filed version and the adjustment trail so later questions can be answered clearly.

What to gather before the review

  • Original and corrected slips and summaries
  • Distribution calculations and affected return schedules
  • Reason for change and submission records

Does issuing an amended slip automatically amend the T3 return?

No. Review whether a separate trust-return adjustment is required. The slip, summary and return processes need to be coordinated rather than treated as one automatic update.

Your next step

Reconcile the original and revised slips, summary and return before submitting the corrections.
