Canadian spouses generally file individual income-tax returns, but several credits and benefits depend on family information. Your spouse's net income can therefore affect your result even though their employment income is not simply added to yours for ordinary personal income-tax brackets.

Separate returns still need coordinated information

CRA uses marital status and adjusted family net income for benefit calculations. A spouse's income also matters when determining whether certain spouse-related credits are available. A missing or estimated figure can lead to later recalculation.

Use the relevant year's information and the correct income measure. Gross pay, take-home pay, taxable income, and net income are different amounts. Ask for the specific figure needed instead of copying a convenient number from a pay statement.

An example of an avoidable mismatch

One spouse files early using an estimate for the other's income. The second return later includes additional investment income. The original benefit or credit calculation may need to change. Coordinating the records before filing reduces that uncertainty.

Organize the family file

  • Both spouses' current-year income documents.
  • Marital-status changes and their dates.
  • Each person's filed return or final preparation summary.
  • Benefit notices and claims that need coordination.

If you use different preparers, agree on how the required figures will be shared accurately and with consent. If your spouse is outside Canada or the relationship has broken down, explain the facts; do not automatically enter zero because no Canadian return is available. Before filing, ask which family figures remain estimates and how they will be confirmed.
