The direct answer
You need sufficient documentary support, and the required details increase with the invoice amount. Supplier identification, transaction details and the applicable GST/HST information matter; at specified thresholds the registration number and purchaser details are required. A credit-card statement alone may not supply them. Verify the supplier’s registration where appropriate before claiming tax that was charged.
Review the invoice before claiming the tax
A card statement can confirm payment without supplying the information required for an input tax credit. Keep the vendor's invoice, description of the purchase and relevant tax details. Where a document is incomplete, request a corrected copy early. The documentation requirements depend on the transaction, so a handwritten total is not a reliable substitute for checking the original bill.
Match the purchase to commercial activity
Record what was purchased, how it was used and whether any personal or exempt-activity portion needs attention. GST/HST registration does not make every tax amount on every receipt recoverable. Reconcile the invoice with the books and any refund or credit note. A clear record prevents the same tax from being claimed again in a later reporting period.
What to gather before the review
- Complete invoices and vendor tax details
- Business-purpose and use information
- Payment records, credit notes and prior claim history
Is a bank withdrawal enough to support an input tax credit?
Usually it does not provide all the necessary invoice information by itself. Keep the underlying document and have the purchase reviewed against the applicable requirements before including the credit.
Your next step
Ask for a complete invoice and keep it linked to the payment in your records.
