The direct answer

The trust must actually have ceased to exist; an intention to finish soon is not enough. Confirm the wind-up, distributions and any remaining property or income before selecting the final-return indicator. The relevant tax year-end and filing deadline depend on the trust type. A final T3 also does not replace a separate clearance-certificate review where one is needed.

Confirm what remains in the estate or trust

Reconcile assets, liabilities, expected receipts and distributions before marking a return final. A trustee's intention to finish soon is not the same as the trust actually ceasing to exist. Identify refunds, unresolved investments and other outstanding matters. The preparer needs the legal and financial facts establishing the end of the trust, not just a nearly empty account.

Keep closure and clearance decisions distinct

A final T3 and a review of tax clearance serve different purposes. Keep the distribution history, final period and relevant correspondence together. Do not assume selecting the final-return indicator removes potential executor responsibilities or resolves every earlier year. Coordinate remaining legal and tax steps before the records are archived and the final money is released.

What to gather before the review

  • Closing ledger and final asset/liability schedule
  • Distribution dates and wind-up documentation
  • Outstanding tax matters and clearance correspondence

Can I mark the return final because I expect to distribute everything next month?

An expectation is not the same as completed termination. Confirm the facts and correct final period with the preparer before using the final-return indicator.

Your next step

Reconcile the closing ledger, outstanding receipts and final distribution date with the trustee before filing.
