An FHSA does not necessarily have to be cashed out as taxable income if you do not buy a qualifying home. A qualifying direct transfer to your own RRSP or RRIF can be available, subject to the transfer rules and your FHSA's participation deadline.
Choose the withdrawal route deliberately
A qualifying home withdrawal, a taxable withdrawal, and a direct registered-plan transfer are different transactions. CRA explains that a withdrawal that does not meet a qualifying category is generally included in income. Taking the money personally and then depositing it elsewhere is not automatically equivalent to a direct transfer.
An excess FHSA amount complicates the process and should be resolved under the applicable rules. Do not assume that moving or withdrawing the account automatically clears every excess-contribution tax.

Review the account before its deadline
For example, your home-buying plans may change several years after opening the account. Ask the issuer for the opening date, transfer process, and closure deadline, then discuss which option fits your circumstances before requesting a payment.
Gather the FHSA record
- Opening date and contribution history across all FHSAs.
- Transfers from RRSPs and earlier withdrawals.
- CRA participation-room information reconciled to your own records.
- The receiving RRSP or RRIF details if considering a transfer.
Ask your preparer to confirm the tax treatment and any required forms before the institution executes the transaction. Keep the transfer confirmation and final FHSA statement. The decision should account for future tax and cash needs, rather than treating account closure as a routine bank withdrawal.
